Marriage as it was from the beginning shown in a sermon concerning the nature, ends, form, & duties of marriage, 1700.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a transcription of a sermon given at the marriage ceremony of G. W. to E. E. The sermon covers such subjects as posterity and the duties of husbands and wives to each other; a large portion is dedicated to condemnation of the practice of self-marriage and explication of the spiritual and temporal consequences of such unlawful matrimony. The sermon also criticizes the traditions of kneeling before one's spouse or exchanging rings as blasphemous, declaring, "There is the action of wedding with the ring, what is this but as a spell and a charm...What think you of putting the ring on the fourth finger of the left hand, what can be the meaning of this except it ariseth from an old wifes tale, that there is a vein from thence that runs to the heart." The volume concludes with a record of the vows and the pastor's exhortations both to the newly married couple and to those unmarried in the congregation.
